Nepal protesters turn to Dorsey’s BitChat app to evade social media ban

Amid deepening economic hardship and rising corruption, Nepal’s government banned 26 major social media platforms, sparking massive protests driven by Generation Z. Young demonstrators, angered by both restricted communication and unfair privileges enjoyed by political elites, took to the streets of Kathmandu and other cities, demanding an end to censorship and systematic corruption. The unrest quickly escalated, leading to deadly clashes with security forces, the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and curfews in several areas.

Although the government lifted the social media ban after 19 tragic deaths and hundreds of injuries, the demonstrations underscored the power of youth mobilization in Nepal and the crucial role digital platforms play in economic activity and political debate. The protests highlight the frustration of a generation confronting high unemployment, limited opportunities, and pervasive inequality, with many demanding lasting reforms far beyond restored access to their favorite apps.
